In 1976, the Vestry and people of St. Peter’s Church, Ellicott City, made a commitment to plant a mission church in western Howard County. St. Andrew’s celebrated its first Eucharist on the feast of St. Andrew, November 30, 1980, at nearby Glenwood Middle School. As restoration of historic Union Chapel was completed, St. Andrew’s celebrated its first service there on Christmas Eve,1980.
In 1985, St. John’s Parish, Ellicott City, began supporting the efforts of the growing congregation. That commitment enabled St. Andrew’s to secure a full-time priest and provide a growing pastoral and outreach ministry to the community. In 1992, the Rev. Harry Brunett was called to be Vicar of St. Andrew’s and an Associate Rector of St. John’s.
Parish House
A building addition to Union Chapel, completed in 1994, included space for the parish office and a small Sunday School. However, this space soon proved inadequate and in 1995, the contemporary service and Sunday School were moved to nearby Bushy Park Elementary School. St. Andrew’s became an independent parish in 1997 and Harry Brunett became its rector. In 1997 a ten acre tract of land near Union Chapel on Route 97 was purchased with plans to build a multi-purpose Parish House with full worship space, classrooms and offices. The first service of worship in the Parish House was held on St. Andrew’s Day, Dec. 1, 2002. The Parish House was dedicated on January 26, 2003
